How Long Do Aircraft Accident Investigations Take?

When an aircraft accident occurs, one of the first questions people ask is: "How long will the investigation take?" The answer isn’t simple. Aircraft accident investigations are highly technical, regulated processes that can take months—or even years—to complete. 🕒 Typical Timeline Most investigations unfold in several stages: Preliminary Report (First 30 Days): Within the first month, investigators usually release a preliminary report. This outlines basic facts—such as the aircraft type, flight path, weather conditions, and known data from the black boxes (if available). Final Report (6 Months to 2 Years): A full investigation typically takes between 6 months and 2 years, depending on the severity and complexity of the accident. Some of the accidents takes longer than that like the Ethiopian Airlines accident flight 302 it took over 45 month to complete a final report.  🛬 What Affects the Duration? King Air F90 Crashes in São Paulo, Killing 2 people and multiple injuries.

A tragic aviation accident occurred in São Paulo, Brazil, on February 7, 2025, when a Beechcraft King Air F90 aircraft crashed while attempting an emergency landing on Marques de São Vicente Avenue in the Barra Funda district. The twin-engine aircraft, carrying at least two people, collided with a bus before erupting into flames, leading to multiple casualties and injuries.

Eyewitnesses reported that the aircraft appeared to be in distress before descending rapidly towards the busy avenue. In its attempt to land, the King Air F90 struck a moving bus, causing a massive fireball upon impact. The crash site was engulfed in flames as emergency responders rushed to the scene. Both occupants of the aircraft were tragically killed in the accident. Additionally, several people on the ground, including bus passengers and a motorcyclist, sustained injuries due to the impact and resulting fire. The number of injured individuals is still being assessed as authorities continue their investigation.

Firefighters and paramedics arrived promptly to extinguish the fire and provide medical assistance to those affected. The Brazilian Air Force and local aviation authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

This incident draws parallels to another King Air crash that occurred on February 6, 2025, in the Philippines. A King Air 350, registered as N349CA, crashed into a rice field in Barangay Malatimon, Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Sur, at approximately 2:00 p.m. local time. The aircraft, which had departed from Mactan, Cebu, and was en route to Cotabato, went down suddenly, killing all four occupants, including three foreigners.

Investigators are working to determine whether mechanical failure, pilot error, or other factors contributed to the São Paulo crash, and whether any lessons from past incidents, such as the one in the Philippines, could help prevent similar tragedies in the future. The circumstances leading to the emergency landing are being closely examined to understand if any preventive measures could have been taken.

Authorities will release more details as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, this tragic event serves as a reminder of the risks involved in aviation and the importance of stringent safety measures. The São Paulo community mourns the lives lost and hopes for a swift recovery for those injured.

Stay tuned for further updates.
